Nearer to the Heart's Desire: How Focusing Allows What You Want and What is Real to Come Closer To Each Other

A Focusing Seminar with Ann Weiser Cornell, PhD

Ann Weiser Cornell
For many years I have been convinced of the importance of wanting. People often crush their own wanting, saying for example: “That can never happen so I won’t allow myself to want it.” Allowing ourselves to feel our wanting can bring strength, confidence, and a sense of direction. Wanting is powerful.
On the other hand, I don’t believe that all we have to do is visualize what we want, and it will happen. Things happen, and many things that happen are not at all what we wanted. The idea that we can bend reality to our will is an arrogant dominance paradigm, and surely part of the current world crisis.

What I want and What is wanted

There is however some relationship between wanting and what happens. I have been experimenting with a way of being in touch with wanting that gets me in touch with not what “I separately” want, but with “what is wanted.” When I do this, sometimes astonishing coincidences happen, where I happen to meet people who need something I can give and who have something to give me that I need, both at the same time.
I’d like to spend a weekend with advanced Focusers in Hamburg exploring and experimenting with kinds of wanting and kinds of relating to reality, using group and paired exercises.
Including:
  • How to get in touch with wanting, how to find out what we want
  • How to want and let go of wanting at the same time
  • How to sense “what is wanted” and how that can be different from but similar to “what I want”
  • How to relate to situations that seem quite awful and not at all what we want
  • How "wanting" is related to Gendlin's "life-forward energy"
Join me for this very special opportunity for Focusers with at least two levels of experience. We have limited space, so please sign up as soon as it feels right.

Our Seminar Space
